Blues Letter  #77                                                                                                       All The Blues That's Fit to Hear

MY TOMMY'S IN TOWN!!!

He's here!  At an undisclosed location, but he's here!  Of course, it's only undisclosed to me.  Dan won 't tell me.  [Side note to Dan:  I told you I wasn't roaming the hotel looking for him; I was just trying to get some exercise.]  As of today, there are approximately ten tickets left, so call now if you plan to join us.  I'll get back to My Tommy soon.  TOMORROW NIGHT!!! YAY!!!

Friday night was one for the memory books!  A couple of months ago, Gretchen and I were confirming her February 13th gig, and she said to me, "I've been wanting to hold a "Dan King Appreciation Night" and invite musicians.  Let's do it that night."  And thus, an annual event was born.  The Second Friday of February is henceforth "Dan King Appreciation Night."  Where to begin?  With Cassie Taylor, who delivered a third wonderful Short Set.   She opens again this Friday for Jockamo, and if you've not experienced a woman, a bass, and a voice, you're in for a treat.  Plus, she's pretty and sweet.

Then at 7:00, the Gretchen Troop Band took the stage early, and for the next three and one half hours, the house rocked to the rafters!  Some of the talent joining G and her boys included:
Paul Rogalski, Jessica Rowand, Keith Wojciechowski, Jasco, Eef, Joe Pacheco,  Rex Peoples, Jay Forrest, Lionel Young, and Deborah Stafford.  A big, HUGE highlight was Gretchen and Rex on "The Thrill is Gone."  They brought it back.  At one point, I counted nine musicians on stage, when they were tearing up "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)."  Gretchen, girl!  You know how to run a jam!

One of the evening's cutest factors was when Jasco's son, Colorado "Guitar" Coomes, decided to join his father in a solo.  See the photo.
Everyone one was getting in on appreciating Dan King!  It was a tremendous night for a marvelous man.  Congratulations, Dan (and Gretchen) on such a perfect and fun evening. I can't wait for next year.

Saturday night we welcomed our Valentine's Sweethearts, the Johnny O Band, back from Memphis.  The dance floor filled up early and stayed that way.  They once again showed us why they represented the CBS in Memphis, doing us proud all over again.  It was a lovely Valentine's evening with some really great friends, the way it's supposed to be.  Plus, I had just enough private time with the boys to hear about some of their experiences, and it sounds like the journey was fulfilling on many levels.

Sunday, I went to Longmont for the fund-raiser for Karen McMeans that we told you about last week.  There were some great bands, but the stand-outs for me were our own Glass Ceiling and Girls on Top.  I'd not heard GOT before, and they are a THRILLING act, with three voices that that send chills up and down the body.  We have them this Saturday night, and I urge all music lovers to join us.  This band knows what they're doing, and the three front women are incredibly easy on the eyes.  Their choreography is beyond sexy.  Trust.

Don't forget we have Trampled Under Foot (hopefully with an opening set from Lionel) next Wednesday.  We're hoping for a 2008 IBC Winners' Reunion, I'm just waiting for confirmation that Lionel can open.  Once that's arranged, Lionel will go on at 6:30, followed by TUF at 7:30.  Tickets are selling fast, so again, call TODAY!

Tonight, however, is CCTV54's fund-raiser "Blues Rent Party."  CCTV54 has generously hosted "Broads on Blues" (on hiatus currently), and brings a lot of great Blues to our community airwaves, so join Jill Watkins and I tonight!  It will be fun.
