Saturday night, The Mike Kaylor Band came to our room, tore the doors off, put them back on, and then tore them off again! It was their first time, and the impression was a lasting one. They'll be back, as they hit Favorite Status right out of the gate. In a funny, related story, when they played at Oskar's for the IBC finals, Dan turned to me and said, "We HAVE to book them! Why haven't you told me about them?" Um, I did. About a month before. You weren't listening. [ASIDE TO SHARON KING: do you have this problem with him?]
Tonight, the wonderful Willie Houston is back with us; he's a long-time favorite, and the room loves him. Tomorrow night we have the Lionel Young band, and we are celebrating the 79th birthday of our dear friend and fellow Blues lover, Rita, so come out and throw down for her last birthday in her 70s. Next year, we're going to throw one hell of an eightieth! Oh, and Bryan Gordan will be on bass.
Saturday night the Jake Loggins band is coming up from C. Springs for their inaugural gig with us, and I've heard so much about this kid, mainly from Chick and Jill (Watkins, as if you didn't know). It was Jill's suggestion that Dan book them, so they're bound to be good.
So, I want to head back to the No Boat Blues Cruise. We had a blast! And, as it was but a few days prior to Dan's birthday, we partied it up. Blue Krew kicked it off in the atrium at 1:00, and their sound was GREAT! At one point, an attractive gentleman asked if he could join me, as there were no other available seats. I said, "Of course." I couldn't figure out why he looked so familiar to me. Then Dan came over and asked me, "Have you met Randy McAllister?" THAT'S why he looked so familiar. He seemed to enjoy Blue Krew's set as much as I did, but then he had to get on road with his band. They were just staying over night, but it was very nice meeting him. As some of our readers may know, I recently took over the booking duties from Chef Dan, and Randy and I were trying to get our calendars to match up. Alas, it wasn't to be (yet), but I do have three voice mails from him which I'm saving for life. His speaking voice it just as sexy as his singing voice, and just hearing him say "Hello, Honey," makes me swoon. Damn, what a voice.
Ok, back to reality. After that set, the Gretchen Troop band KILLED IT! Gretchen even received a spontaneous, and unanimous standing ovation. Her voice was spot on. The entire band was. And Mark Diamond looks really cute with his bass in the atrium. Just saying (for those of you who haven't heard the new Gretchen Troop Band, join us on February 13; Gretchen is throwing a "Dan King Appreciation Night," and might be closing with a jam; this band is TIGHT!). After their set, we all got a little break before the evening's festivities, and it was a good thing.
My Beloved Delta Sonics opened the evening, and they brought along a couple of guests. First up with them was Sonny Boy Aiden, Boa's Boy. There is something about an adorable six-year-old playing harp that thrills a crowd. And he thrills with more than just his cuteness. The boy can blow! He just keeps getting better. After their first set, they hit it again with The Delicious Miss Brown, or for short, Miss Delish. Erica hadn't played the room in a while, and she felt the love and gave it back! Sonny Boy Aiden was so awed by Erica that he sat there slack-jawed. Imagine his surprise when she called him up! The were great together. But we weren't yet done with Miss Delish. My Beloved Delta Sonics were followed by the Lionel Young Band (again, with Bryan Gordan on bass), and they set the place on fire. Erica also joined in, and Lionel arranged for Dan's birthday spanking line. That was unexpected fun. But it wasn't over yet.

The next morning, for the Gospel Brunch, Rex Peoples brought most of his band, and a couple of Erica's former bandmates, Scotty on drums and Jim on keys, joined in the fun. Hearing Erica and Scotty singing together again brought more than a few tears to my eyes. They are perfection together. Rex and Erica together, well, what can I say? It was so beautiful that Dan and I are talking about holding Gospel Brunches occasionally, but not at 9:30 a.m. We think 11:00 a.m. is more civilized. Stay tuned.
It was a wonderful weekend, and we're sure to do it again next year.
This past Sunday, Michaela Rae and the Johnny O Band brought some serious blues to the room, and it was also a fund-raiser to send them to Memphis. Michaela opened with a solo, and she's ready. The Johnny O Band then hit their Memphis set in 24 minutes, 9 seconds. And it was tight! Great set, guys! You're ready. And on that note, we're all thinking about you and sending out the good Blues Vibes for your trip next week. We love you!
We will be returning to the "Memo" section of the Blues Letter soon. We're all getting used to our new roles, and believe it or not, those memos actually take time and thought. Imagine that.
