Blues Letter  #57                                                                                                       All The Blues That's Fit to Hear

RED, WHITE AND BLUES!

But, before I get into the political process, we would like to give all of you the information regarding Craig Lawler.  Craig's memorial services will be held Saturday, October 4 at 10AM, at Saint Thomas Episcopal Church, 2201 Dexter St., Denver (303-388-4395).  A reception will follow.  In lieu of flowers, people can contribute to the Lawler Foundation through the Lawler website or to the Kidney Cancer Association at http://kidneycancer.org/.  Something informs me Craig is going to have a lot of good friends in attendance, bidding him a loving farewell.  Albeit far too soon.

This Sunday, the Broads are back on the air with a new live show, featuring Delores Scott and  Mojo's Music Academy, along with footage of some of their talented students.  Customarily, after we go live (3:00 – 4:00) Jill and I haul the B.o.B. team back to the Outlook, DVD of the show in hand, and have a little mini viewing party.  We won't be doing so this Sunday, but rather the following Sunday, just before the blues jam.  Maybe.  Depends on how this Monday goes, and whether or not Jill and I feel comfortable showing our faces in public.  Here's why:  As I might have mentioned before, this coming Monday, October 6th, the Outlook is moving to the Boulder Theater for an evening.  Well, sort of.  Broads on Blues, (Jill Watkins and yours truly), will be the MCs of a massive pro-invite blues jam/fund-raiser for Senator Barack Obama's campaign, and the list of musicians reads like an Outlook event calendar:  Jack Hadley Band, Mojambus, Johnny O, Delta Sonics, and the Gretchen Troop Band are the bands, with individual jammers including, Mark Diamond, Teresa Lynne, Dan Treanor, Jerry Deall, Jill Watkins, Michaela Rae, Sonny Boy Aiden, and two confirmed nationals, Ken Saydak and Delores Scott.  There are a couple of more unconfirmed nationals, and if/when they confirm, we'll send out an updated press release.  Doors open at 5:30 and the show begins at 6:00.  Tickets are $20 each, and it is an all-ages event.  Bring the kids!

Now, it's been a few weeks since we've heard from our Senior Guitar Correspondent, Chick Cavallero.  Well, we've got another monster coming this Friday, and here's Chick's assessment of Mr. Joe Moss:

Anyone who saw Nick Moss & the Flip Tops tear it up at the Outlook and the Trinidaddio in August knows that Nick Moss earned every bit of his rep as a killer blues guitarist. On Oct 3 you have a chance to see Nick's big brother, Joe, and trust me, brother Joe is just as good. Joe and Nick Moss are excellent proof that the future of the blues is in good (and talented) hands.

Joe can play straight-ahead blues as well as funky soul-blues, moving effortlessly from one to another. His voice has a passion that matches his strong soulful guitar playing, a guitar that has an incredible sound without overpowering your ears. Joe's smooth playing makes each note drip sweetly from the strings.

His live performances in Chicago have been described as downright eye-popping. Buddy Guy says, "Joe Moss is one of our favorite bands at LEGENDS. He is energetic, a strong guitarist, and always a crowd pleaser."

He wins fans every time he plays. He won me over at KABBU, a defunct bar in Erie, CO about 18 months ago. Joe played his butt off to pretty much a crowd of little more than a 10-15 people. Actually, my buddy Bob, my son Casey and myself may have been the only folks who specifically came and paid to see Joe, the other dozen or so were still there FAKing it. Still, he didn't shortchange us. He had just driven 12 hours and had black circles under his eyes but the 'limited audience' didn't stop him. He spent the next 3 hours playing, sweating and roaming the bar like a blues troubadour, dazzling us with some of the sweetest 50s Chi-town blues. He played a lot of material from his "Monster Love" CD (which is a great addition to anyone's collection).  He did a great job on Freddie King's "Have You Ever Loved a Woman" and BB's "Please Love Me". There was an obvious influence of Albert and Freddie King in his music, as well as some Muddy & Howlin' Wolf but his playing was far from just a knock-off of these legends. While his music certainly keeps their spirit alive and well, he has found his own sound within the blues. What Joe has created might be called hybrid blues, or maybe new contemporary blues, or maybe…I don't know exactly what you call it, but it combines Chicago blues with some roots music then tosses in funk and R&B resulting in some damn tasty music.

He is a combination guitarist, bandleader, vocalist and composer (drove the truck with all the instruments as well). His song-writing has a unique sophistication to it. His song list mixes in a supply of his own compositions while managing to combine some sweet slow stuff with house-rocking Chicago Blues. Some of his best compositions are about his family. In Erie, he did a bouncy rockabilly number about his wife called "Oh Sandra" that was sharp and even had dash of western swing to it. He also introduced one that he wrote for his daughter named "Maricela's Smile" which is such a sweet song. It is also the name of his newest CD which unfortunately I have not had a chance to pick up yet, I figure I'll do that Friday night. I really think Joe is trying to grab the next generation of blues fans, so he tries out a lot of new ideas so that anyone listening will have something in common with his music. At the same time he is able to give an old guy like me a better idea of some contemporary sounds I might be missing out on. He certainly is not willing to close off any creativity over stylistic concerns of what is, or isn't 'the blues'. The result is amusical mixture done with a timeless style that makes everyone who loves good music want to get up and dance or scream their lungs off.

(Continued From First Column)

That night in Erie, he treated the three of us with the Joe Moss version of the blues. This featured spectacular guitar work with solid backing from his band which featured a tasteful organ along with drums and bass. Joe may have been beat from his long ride, but he was still in great form, whether bending his notes soulfully or getting flashy and playing his guitar behind his head, he made that guitar sing and cry for over three hours. Some of the sweetest, cleanest, crisp playing I have ever heard. He knew he found some new fans that night and spent half the time playing in front of our table and directly for us. A few times he even took my shot glass, still dripping with Jagermeister (Jager? what were thinking?), to use as an improvised slide. I never thought a cheap plastic shot-glass with flashing lights could sound so good, though I'm surprised it didn't melt from the way he was burning up his strings.  One thing is for sure, you will get a total effort from his band.  Joe Moss will never just 'go thru the motions' regardless of the size of the crowd.

So, while he may be in brother's Nick's shadows in national fame he does not take a backseat to him in talent. Joe Moss will flat out play some of the sweetest music you will ever hear. Hope you'll come on out and give this guy the type of crowd he deserves to play for and show him Northern Colorado really DOES love the blues! I have to thank my wife Patti for passing up the Taos Wool Festival so I could catch Joe again. I am serious here, Patti was born to knit and that Wool Market is a big deal, we had plans to go but luckily I married a wonderful woman who saw the 'pain in my heart' and gave up Taos for Joe Moss. Whew, thanks babe!

You can check Joe out ahead of time at: http://www.joemossband.com  and Myspace

I'll see you there.  And don't forget the Jenn Cleary Band Saturday night.  It's been awhile.   Honey Bee Sepeda

MEMO TO DAN

Dear Dan:

It's been a few weeks since you and I revisited the topic of my guild throne and marble receiving table.  I know that with the new sound booth the dimensions of both will have to be altered.  Or, rather than continue holding Royal Court in the corner, perhaps I should just rope off (velvet) the center of the room for the new throne and table…your thoughts?

Preciously,
Honeybee

Uh oh Honey,

We had that throne delivered to your new place…maybe I had the address wrong?
