Yep! The Informants informed me Saturday night, and I'm a much better person for it. More on them in a minute.
Thursday night was to be My Beloved Delta Sonics, but some sporting event circumnavigated the schedule, and instead, we had a wonderful happy hour with Al Chesis and Erik Boa, and "Sonny Boy" Aiden and Jill Watkins joined the fun. Speaking of Jill, how about we let her speak for herself:
Happy Hour with "Sonny Boy" Aiden
It was right before the CU Buffs vs. WVU football game last week. I was going to leave work and head home as quickly away from campus as I could… then Honey called. "I just want to warn you that the Boulder Outlook is FULL of handsome men for the football game, including Al and Boa from the Delta Sonics! They are playing for happy hour until game time" she said. So, I, of course, drove instead into oncoming football fans, and away from the comfort of home to be THOROUGHLY entertained by the "Delta-lites" as I like to call them. I was going to see Al and Boa . . . the OTHER handsome men for the football game had no draw for me whatsoever. None. At all. Whatsoever.
The"Delta-Lite" version of the Delta Sonics, Al Chesis and Erik Boa, have a natural rhythm together, and their duo works very well. I rarely get to see Al play the guitar, and it's SUCH a treat! Then, they bring up Boa's precocious, and oh-so-loveable, six year-old, "Sonny boy" Aiden, on harmonica, and conversations and game-time anticipation are forgotten. All turn to watch as "Sonny boy" and his harp-blowin'-show-man-showin'-I'm-six-but-I-be-knowin' skills as he steps up and plays like it's recess. I am increasingly impressed with Aiden's playing. He blows that train whistle, bends those notes, and tastefully places a high note on the off beat in its exact place. Never too many notes. Never stepping on anyone's toes. But definitely making his presence known throughout the songs and stepping up for his solos like a pro! I did see someone pay him so, he's a professional now. Look out world. Here he comes!
Yeah, it was like what she said. It was a lot of fun.
Speaking of fun. The Informants! That's a whole lot of fun on our stage. Sexy, sassy, sultry, sensuous, and sumptuous. And that just describes the men. Kerry Pastine needs new words to describe her stage presence. Here's what some others have to say:
"You guys are among the very best (and in many ways, THE best) I've heard, and I'm including national acts such as Sting, Allison Krause, and Big Head Todd in this comparison. You brought the absolute timing and precision of a recording, but were able to do it with the looseness and improvisational element that makes live music so enjoyable. That's a damned tough thing to do and you guys did it. " (Bob Josjor-Sound Engineer)
"... Kerry Pastine makes every note sting, and a muscular crew of bar-band boogie men light a fire under exuberant tracks like the title cut, which is capable of getting any joint jumping." (Westword)
"These folks are nasty and fun my friends... Beware, judging from what I've been hearing, they will not be Denver's little secret for long." (Dan Aykroyd, a.k.a. Elwood Blues, House of Blues Radio Hour)
I agree with all three of them. Can't wait to have this band back.
Tonight! Whose coming? My New Best Friend, Delores Scott, that's who! Delores took her Maiden Outlook Voyage back in June, and we're all very excited for her return (the wait staff nearly came to blows over who gets to work tonight). She has a powerful voice, solid presence, and can tell a story! Nights with Delores are like having an old friend in your living room telling you stories through verse and prose. That said, join me tonight for an intimate, at-home evening with an old friend.
Tomorrow night The Catfish Cray Blues Band is taking their Maiden Outlook Voyage, so let's welcome Catfish back with his new band. Congratulations, Catfish!
Friday night we have Jockamo, always fun, always good, and Skye Downing's voice is always worth the trip. And so is Sammy Dee, who's with us Saturday night. Four nights in a row. I need a nap.
Ok, for those of you who might not have read last week's Blues Letter, kiss my…just kidding. Sort of. Sunday, October 6th at 5:30 p.m. the doors to the Boulder Theater will open for a night to remember! A benefit for Senator Barack Obama, billed as Boulder's Biggest Blues Jam (Pro-Invite only, $20 cover), the music starts at 6:15, and ends in the neighborhood of 11:00. This is going to be a lot of fun for Broads on Blues, given that Jill and I will have just aired live the day before, and then we're MCing this "jam." I can't tell you how much fun it is to work on two somewhat stressful projects at once! Jill and I are just loving it. {NOTE TO JILL: I don't know about you, but I'm going into a self-imposed catatonic state on October 7th.] I've also just moved. I'm residing in a maze of boxes, can't find my clothes, had to go buy more deodorant, and then promptly found the almost new one I had, and yet I'm still hopeful that I will eventually find the box with the silverware. Until then, please don't comment if you witness food under my fingernails. It can't be helped. See you tonight. Honey Bee Sepeda
MEMO TO DAN
Dear Dan:
As you know, I'm trying to get moved into my new place, and it's very slow-going, what with the upcoming Barack Obama Blues Benefit (10/6 @ 5:30, in case I haven't mentioned it), and Jill and I gearing up for our next live October show (10/5 @ 3:00 – 4:00, in case I haven't mentioned it). I was wondering if you would mind clearing the music calendar for the next couple of weeks, so I can stay home and unpack on those evenings. I think, in all fairness, we should let this week continue, but after Mark and Lionel's jam on Sunday, I'll need to stay home in the evenings for a couple of weeks. Thanks, and I'm sure everyone will understand.
Gratefully, Honeybee
Dear Honey:
Here's a better idea. Forget the new place. We will just move you into the hotel and start having music every night.
