Settle in, get a snack and a beverage, because I'm on a real roll this week. You may be reading for a few hours. This involves politics. And the blues. My two favorite topics.
But first, let's discuss what's happening at the Outlook.Tomorrow night my Beloved Delta Sonics (sort of) return to make me happy (it's true; everything at the Outlook is done to make me happy; it's even in the Mission Statement).Because there is some big sporting event at CU tomorrow night (what season is it?), Dan will have to turn on the televisions at game time, so Al Chesis and Erik Boa are giving us a 4:30 – 6:30 happy hour duo. And even though I'm in the process of moving this week, I will be there.I love my Beloved Delta Sonics; even the abbreviated version.
Saturday night welcomes the fantastic Informants back to the room.Well I must say, with more than a touch of embarrassment, that I've not actually experienced this band, and have been chided mercilessly by both Vanessa and Jill for my ignorance.I'm so excited about them that I asked Dan for a room for the night, you know, just in case things get a little crazy or something. At least that's what I've been told to expect.Jill's staying too. Party in Honeybee and Jill's room!BYOEverything.
Please don't forget we have a special appearance next Wednesday, September 24th.The Triumphant Return of Chicago's Own, The Fabulous Delores Scott! She's backed by The Fabulous Colorado All Stars, which includes two of my favorite musicians, and human beings, Gretchen Troop and Jodie Woodward. The Remarkable Randall Dubis (whom I just adore) is another of the All Stars, and with Peter Gregory on drums rounding out the act, it's a party from the first note.I. Can't.Wait.
There's another date on a calendar that has me agitated, excited, anxious, thrilled, scared, anticipatory (once again, ladies and gentlemen, we know I can do this all day, however,I'm in a generous mood, so I'll spare you and stop the list now), etc. Monday, October 6th, 5:30 – 10:30, at the Boulder Theater; stop what you're doing right now and mark it in your calendars with a permanent Sharpie™.Boulder is going to have one of the biggest blues jams ever! And, it's a fundraiser for Senator Barack Obama, the Democratic Presidential candidate, in case any of our audience lives under rocks.
Here's what happened: I received the following from my dear friend, photographer, Diana Caile:
Hi Honey Pie! [NOTE FROM HONEYBEE: Diana will be summarily punished for getting my Blues Name wrong]I am collaborating with Boulder Grassroots for Obama (they have raised a ton of money already) and am taking the lead to put together an Obama fundraiser at the Boulder Theater on Monday, October 6th. Can you check with the musicians you know and see if anybody wants to donate their time for a concert? We're going to hold a silent and live auction and my photo exhibit. It's still taking shape, but that's where we are so far. It will be heavily promoted in the media, on campus, and through email blasts. Maybe we could somehow work in a play on words with the phrase "Blue Monday," as in making sure Colorado is a blue state in the election? Let me know. Do you want to go to lunch some day? -D
In case you're wondering, we had lunch the following day.We went to Aji downtown.Vanessa joined us as she's doing the geeky tech stuff for the event. We all three had taco salads. But I digress.Within 24 hours, so many musicians had responded, that Jill and I were able to plan the entire show this past Saturday. Why? Because Broads on Blues–Jill and yours truly–are the event's MCs. Yeah, scary stuff. But thanks to Jill's anal retentiveness, not only is the show planned down to the final picoseconds, IT'S ON A SPREADSHEET!!!Jill's very organized. And occasionally annoying.
Wed 9/24 - Delores Scott Thu 9/25 - Catfish Kray Blues Band
Fri 9/26 - Jockamo
Sat 9/27 - Sammy Dee
(Continued...)
Let's move on to the show.Running the jam from the stage side of things, we have the Gretchen Troop Band with Mark Diamond. In terms of bands, we also have Mojambus and the Delta Sonics. And if that weren't enough, the list of individual artists is pretty exciting:Johnny O, Teresa Lynne, Jill Watkins, Jerry Deall, and Jack Hadley will be jamming with the various bands. For nationally renowned artists, we have pianist and organist Ken Saydak, from Chicago (who's played with Johnny Winter, Otis Rush, Big Shoulders, Mighty Joe Young, Dave Specter, etc.) and the aforementioned Fabulous Delores Scott, also from Chicago and often found singing with Koko Talyor!
Tickets are on sale now at bouldertheater.com, and are $20 each. The doors will open at 5:30, and Broads on Blues take the stage at 6:00.A press release will be issued this week with more formal details, but until then, this event should give a lot of our favorite musicians some great exposure, while raising money for the best cause I can remember in my lifetime. Please come out and support our musical friends who work so hard for us!Besides, with the talent we've lined up, many of the 800 in attendance are going to find out about the Outlook and the caliber of talent we regularly host. We're going to make new friends!Monday, October 6th, 5:30 – 10:30.

MEMO TO DAN
Dear Dan,
It has been brought to my attention that some sporting event has interfered with my Beloved Delta Sonics' regular gig. Now, I'm perfectly delighted to enjoy a nice happy hour with Al and Erik, but let's make sure it doesn't happen again.I could get cranky. Is there someone at C.U. I need to contact about scheduling sporting events?
Forgivingly,
Honeybee
Dear Honey:
I’ll get right on this. I know Mike Bohn, the Athletic Director at CU, and have a good relationship with him. Probably has something to do with the TV money they will get for the game from ESPN. I am sure that with my excellent relationship with Mike, and maybe a million dollars or so from your trust fund, we won’t have any problem.
Thanks for the help,
Dan
PS Since you are dipping into the trust fund anyways I have been wanting a new car. Let’s talk.
