The Outlook hosted one hell of a party last Friday night, and this Friday, the 7th, we're doing it again. If you are reading this, you are very lucky as you have the chance to experience the wonderful madness that is the Max Allen Band when they return to the Outlook for a much-lauded encore.
Where to begin? "Underwear Umbrella", perhaps? Or how about with the young, truly astounding guitarist and front man, Max Allen. He's all of 22 years old. And, man can he play. And write. And sing. And he's been doing all three professionally since the ripe age of 16.
Now with four CDs to their credit, the Max Allen Band is touring nationally, igniting audiences country-wide. Although, they are not a blues-driven band, they appeal to the blues fan through tremendous musical skill and a fearless innovative approach to songwriting and performing. Affable and approachable, all three of them exude a confidence unexpected from such a young band, engaging the audience with skill, humor, and pure, raw sound. They are loud. No question. This is a jam band the way jam bands are supposed to sound, only these guys are such gifted musicians, that no amount of volume can drown out the talent. They shift keys and styles throughout, and various sounds seem to float all over the room. They give us all hope for the next generation of touring bands. Come party with us Friday night and find out how much talent it takes to put out such energy. If, however, you find yourself in the horribly unfortunate position to be too busy to attend the performance, do yourself an enormous favor and purchase their last cd, the truly spectacular *Earth Walker *at http://www.maxallenmusic.com
This Saturday the Ricky Earl Band returns. Grab dancing shoes and a date. This is one romantic band, making everyone get their groove on when they hit their blues. Great guitar and vocals for sure, delivered with great passion.
This Blues Jam Sunday, the 9th, with Lionel Young and Mark Diamond is once again open to players. More and more, local players are hearing about these fab Sundays and heading down to jam. Not a player? That's ok, they need an audience, and the sets are always inspiring. What could better than a blues jam?
Wednesday the 12th brings one of the defining musicians of the modern blues movement, Shawn Kellerman; authentic and high energy, reinterpreting traditional blues with his own style and an unforgettable stage presence. He is a guitarist highly respected by his peers and is frequently a guest artist with some of the blues world's heavies. Join us as we absorb Shawn's creative range and hear what 21st Centure blues is going to be about. http://www.shawnkellerman.com
As we may have mentioned in previous editions, the Erica Brown Band is coming back! September 13th is a very lucky day for Boulder. This band is the quintessential hip-shaking band of all time, fronted by a voice from the heavens. Erica Brown has the pipes, the charm, the skill, the originality, and most certainly the personality to be on any stage, anywhere. At the Outlook, we like to think she shines the brightest. Be prepared to be a lifelong fan. It happens to us all.
The Delta Sonics grace our stage again on the 22nd, and there are very few ways I'd rather spend a Saturday night. These guys are great! The delta blues, the hardcore blues, the harp-driven blues. Al Chesis (harp and guitar), Eric Boa (guitar), Willie Panker (drums) and John Butler (bass). They are each seasoned performers who respect and showcase each other's individual skills. As tremendous the distinct talents are of each, as an ensemble they are unreserved perfection, possessing a visceral zeal both dominating and infectious in equal measure; and with that amalgamation, innate physiological reflex disallows the human being the facility to remain sedentary during a performance. At least that was my experience. Or, as D.H. Lawrence puts it so eloquently, "Be still when you have nothing to say; when genuine passion moves you, say what you've got to say, and say it hot." The Delta Sonics say it hot. And, there is *no* shortage of genuine passion on the bandstand. There is also no shortage of vigor, be it unitary or en masse. At times, one is hard pressed to isolate the sources of the detonations of energy radiating from the stage, as they often emerge as one. Then Chesis decides to go to the bar. Or give Boa a hand. And Panker decides to give the windows a sound check. Don't understand? Saturday, September 22, 8:00 p.m. You will.
Stay tuned for some surprises next week. We'll be focusing on acts coming up in October (Steady Rollin' alert!), including Maynard Mills and the Shuffle Tones. And who knows, we just might not be done with September Surprises. One never knows when a great evening of blues is being organized...
