Mistress of The Blues Teresa Lynne and Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin
A quick note from Dan. Before Honey gets going, I wanted to get in a few words. I appreciate all of the support we have been getting for our live music, and wanted to give you a heads up on some extra special stuff coming up over the next few months. Some of these are pretty big ticket performers, and we will be charging a cover ($5 or $10) which is pretty cheap considering who we are talking about. I really love everyone who plays here (or I wouldn’t have booked them), but these are some national acts on the books: Eddie Turner, Friday May 16. (No Cover) Sure Eddie lives in Denver, but this guy has a much larger reach. I love having him here. Kelly Richey, Tuesday May 20 (No Cover) & Friday June 13th ($5). Kelly is just awesome. I got her cheap on a Tuesday night, so it’s free, but the Friday Show will cost you $5. The Insomniacs, Thursday May 29 (No Cover). Nominated by the BMA for Best New Artists, these guys are up and comers. Delores Scott Thursday June 12th (No Cover). This Chicago Legend will be sitting in with Randall, Jody and gang for a special Thursday night performance. The week of June 25th, our friend John Catt is bringing in some great performers for his weekend of Blues from the Top www.grandblues.org. We have been able to pick up a few of these for a great kick off to the weekend. Jason Ricci & New Blood Thursday June 26th ($10). Limited to 100 people, tickets on sale June 1st. We turned so many people away last time that this time we are going to sell tickets in advance. We are going to keep the crowd well below our capacity so seats will be good and there will be more room to dance. Larry Garner Friday June 27th ($5). Larry is a master. Thanks to John Catt for cluing me in to him. Perhaps most exciting for me personally, is that I have finally been able to book an artist who I have been chasing since we started doing the blues. On Wednesday August 27th, I am pleased to announce that we will be hosting Duke Robillard. Not to offend anyone in our knowledgeable audience, but in case you don’t know the Duke he came into prominence with the Room Full of Blues, has recorded with the likes of Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Maria Muldaur, Dr. John and has been awarded the BMA Award as “Best Blues Guitarist” not once, or twice, or thrice, but four times! And Duke is a great guy! Details to follow. That’s almost enough for now except to tell you that on the books for the future I have Smokin’ Joe Kubek featuring Bnois King, Ron Thompson, Bryan Lee. See ya soon. Dan Thanks Dan! I’m so unaccustomed to getting advance information from you that I’m not really sure what to think. You’d BETTER not be thinking about replacing me. Besides, you can’t now. Why? Oh, so much to tell you. Ok first of all, the one and only Mistress of the Blues, Teresa Lynne, gave me the gift of a lifetime last Friday afternoon, thus heralding the guarantee of a wonderful weekend. I, Honey Sepeda, a person who can neither play a note nor carry a tune in a bucket, now have a BLUES NAME!!! It’s true! I’ve arrived. Here’s how it went down: The Mistress asked me for some professional assistance, and I was more than happy to oblige. Here’s her electronic response to me: “Thanks, Honey. You are the true "Blues Bee!!!” There’s a new nick name for ya....HA! I'll introduce you as "Honey the Blues Bee Sepeda" ‘cause you’re busy pollinating the blues....” Yeah, that’s right! I pollinate! So, please join us this Saturday night as the Mistress takes the stage at 8:00. There will also be a baptism and crowning ceremony, as I am now Blues Royalty. Crowning a Royal. With Crown Royal™. By the Mistress herself. And don’t make eye contact with me. Bowing and curtseying are appropriate protocol, and don’t speak unless spoken to. Ok, so my royal status has been solidified. But that was Friday, the beginning of the weekend. It ended on just as high a note. I’d been wanting to sit down with the April/May Blues Revue for a couple of weeks, but hadn’t found the necessary block of time (I’m a cover-to-cover kind of girl). I found that block Sunday afternoon and settled in. Imagine my surprise when I came to page 43 and noticed the place and people in the photo looked familiar. Then I saw the headline: “Jason Ricci and New Blood – Outlook Hotel – Boulder, Colorado – December 21.” The Outlook made Blues Revue!!! I was so excited I immediately devoured the ¾-page piece, which is as much about the Outlook as it is about the band. I went into my kitchen for a celebratory snack when it hit me: I ran back into my office, picked up the magazine, held it sideways, looked a little closer, and sure enough, there it was, next to the photo of Jason and Starski “PHOTOGRAPHY © HONEY SEPEDA.” So my weekend begins with my being bestowed a blues name, and ends with my name being in Blues Revue. I think it a safe bet that I’m going to be pretty insufferable from here on out. There is a terrific profile on Eddie Turner in the same issue, and he’ll be with us next Friday, the 16th. I’ll bet he’s really thrilled to have landed in the same issue as me. Lucky guy. But enough about me. For now. Tomorrow night the Hammer Smith band, led by harp virtuoso, Chris Hammer, will hit the Outlook for their maiden voyage with us. We were able to have a brief telephone conversation a couple of weeks ago, but massive scheduling conflicts negated a follow-up. However, from the band’s myspace page, one can glean plenty:

( Continued From Column 1 ) A high energy, yet authentic style of electric blues with jazz and rock influences, the Hammer Smith Band is an L.A. based Rockin' Blues band. The combined virtuosity of these musicians (harmonica, guitar, bass and drums) creates a fresh, explosive sound that has wide ranging appeal. HAMMER SMITH’s versatile, ingratiating blues harmonica style with his genuine rhythm and blues band makes it obvious that they were born with the blues running through their blood. This band is a real treat, red hot and rockin’ R&B music at its best by real musicians. There seems to be no dearth of harp players on the increasingly competitive blues circuit. But few anywhere have the world-class chops of harmonica wizard Chris "Hammer" Smith. And none can claim, as he can, to have recorded with Paul McCartney, Sammy Hagar, Smokey Robinson, Dolly Parton, Julio Iglesias, John Tesh, and Michael Jackson, and played on soundtracks for some of the biggest commercials and television shows ever aired. After years of L.A. studio work, Smith is kicking his solo career into high gear. Smith began playing harmonica in the late 1960s. He studied along the way with harp-master Rick Epping, and found a mentor in blues legend Sonny Terry. The Hammer Smith Band, formed in the early 1980s, plays a high-energy brand of electric blues basted with a sauce conjured from the roots of Cajun, country, jazz and rock. The group has opened for such blues legends as Bonnie Raitt, Albert King, Big Joe Turner, B.B. King, and Johnny Winter.
So, we have more royalty in the house this week. It’s the kind of competition I like. See you there. 7:30. And please remember about the eye contact. Wouldn’t want to have to sic security on anyone. Ok, back to me. Well, and Jill. Watkins. My co-host on Broads on Blues. We would like to let you know that we have secured the Delta Sonics for our inaugural show on June 1st from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. We would also like to thank all the people who have been so supportive of a show that hasn’t even hit the airwaves yet. We’ve been pretty overwhelmed at the support and encouragement. Thank you. Then there are those Jenn Cleary beans that need some spilling. It seems there is an epidemic of new blues shows at CCTV54: Behind the Song: Songwriters Share Their Inspiration, Stories and Music, With Host Jenn Cleary is a new monthly show debuting Sunday, June 22, at 4:00 p.m. She’s got loads of great ideas of how to build the show, and Jill and I are thrilled to brainstorm with her. We’re becoming television moguls. Before I send my memo to Dan, I want to remind all of you, once again (I know I’m a nag, but you know how you tend to forget) to put May 20th on your calendar. The Kelly Richey Band is coming back to town, and that’s reason aplenty to get really, really, excited. Join us for what promises to be one hell of a rockin’ CD Release Party! Honey “Blues Bee” Sepeda MEMO TO DAN Dear Dan: As you may have heard, I am now royalty and would like to be treated as such whilst at the Outlook. I’m assuming that you won’t be able to secure proper seating for me by this Saturday’s ceremony, but please make sure to have the Crown ready. And get security. I must not be troubled by the commoners. Regally yours, Honey “Blues Bee” Sepeda Your Royal Highness: It will be our pleasure to treat you in the manner you so richly deserve. Your Humble Servant, Dan
